day 2
the challenge: buy only local, hand made or secondhand for Christmas this year
ever had that experience when you are fasting or prepping for a "procedure" (aka colonoscopy) and suddenly food is all around you? TV, magazines, kid's breath? Yeah, now I am inundated with ads to buy this online, wake up at the crack and stand in line, we make it E A S Y.
Biting my knuckle as I press on

dress your husband in organza and velvet
day 1
I threw down the gauntlet and issued the challenge to buy only local, hand made or secondhand for Christmas this year and immediately I started obsessing about what to get mr. abode for Christmas this year. He likes "perfumes", ties and shirts from The Magic of . . . stores - nope, can't do that. I think I'll make him a robe! i have a basement full of fabric all of it perfect for little girls and quilts, I wonder how he'll look? Good first challenge to put my money where my mouth is!
stay tuned

can I do it? resist the urge to park my butt and shop online or run to the BIG BOX stores, can i resist the red bulls-eye, the blue light, the x-mart this year and have a local lizard shopping experience?
dottie angel issued a challenge of the utmost kind - to buy only handcrafted or secondhand goods for the home and closet for 365 days!
WOW, I said, can I do it for one season, buy only local, hand made or secondhand for Christmas this year . . . I'm ready to try
are you?

fun in the sun the Salty Streets Flea Market is a funky venue bursting with local flavor. you have your local music, your aerial artists (AKA skate boarders), cool kitsch and more people watching than you can possibly do with 1 head and two eyes.
Amanda set up a swell booth and she was a very busy girl even selling the huge round Bakelite sunglasses right off her nose!
I grabbed a cute little vintage typewriter that is all ready for prime time! Flea Markets resume in the spring - sponsored by SLUG Magazine. Check them out, you won't be disappointed!

One of our dear consignors brought in some vintage (50s and 60s) cocktail dresses. Amanda tried this pink wonder on and it made her so happy she was like an angel in flight!

skeleton keys: fun, funky, functional
probably maybe at least once a day a customer will approach me and ask with furrowed brow: now what in the heck would someone do with THIS?!
they say this while holding up some random item such as a vintage meat cleaver, an old car part, or a jar full of antique oven handles.
i invariably reply with an old go-to of grown ups everywhere: use your imagination!
love this look? you can get all the pieces to make your own at abode today!
we have: empty frames, skeleton keys, and books of vintage ethan allen wallpaper!
do come in and visit us soon, and don't be afraid to ask: what do i do with THIS?
perhaps you'll see a post about it next week!
peace and love,
amanda lynn

so we at abode thought it might perhaps be kind of a little fun to do a blog post every now and then showing all our lovely readers how to use some of the random items hanging around abode. this week we're focusing on a fun one: skeleton keys!
via design sponge i found this adorable idea; by simply painting an empty frame and several keys a bold fun color and adding a complimentary wallpaper back, you can create a funky one of a kind piece of artwork.
